Lionesses make debut in top Division of 4NCL UK National Chess League

Report by SPTW Founder & CEO, Lorin D’Costa

The She Plays To Win Lionesses A team made their debut in the 4NCL national league at the weekend of 10th and 11th October.

The team have made 3 consecutive promotions in a row to reach the Premier League equivalent of UK chess. They started out in Division 4, becoming back to back champions throughout the leagues as the only female team ever to take part in the competitions 33 year history.

The girls don’t want to stop there, and made their move in the opening weekend.

It is well documented that the rules state a male player is needed in Division 1. So, with some generous help, we enlisted superstar world number 11 Grandmaster Anish Giri from the Netherlands to play on board 1. Not only did he show his class on the board with two quick victories in fine style, but also off the board as he inspired the girls with his knowledge and integration with the team. His presence was an incredible boost and it was clear to see.

Round 1 on the Saturday saw a narrow loss by 4.5-3.5 to the Barnet Knights A team, the north London club fighting back in the time scramble after 4 hours to turn around some games. The girls were disappointed, but it was an opening day awakening that this league is strong with most of the UKs top players participating.

Round 2 on the Sunday saw a convincing win over Sharks 2. The Sharks got promoted with the Lionesses last season, but were no match as the Lionesses won 6-2 across the 8 boards.

After weekend 1, the Lionesses sit 5th from the 12 teams. Early days indeed, but getting the first win has boosted the squad as they prove they belong at the top table of UK club chess.

They have been history makers already, but there is definitely no sign they plan to just make up the numbers. Best of luck to the squad for this season!
