50 girls attend SPTW/CSC girls chess event in Liverpool

Sunday 26th April 2026 saw 50 girls attend a primary and secondary girls chess tournament held at Holly Lodge Girls College in Liverpool.

The event was run as a collaboration with She Plays To Win and Chess in Schools and Communities. Both charities have similar goals to offer chess opportunities to as many state school girls as possible.

The event was also attended by local MP Maria Eagle, who spoke to the girls and inspired them during the event.

Congratulations to Annabel (Primary) and Prashika (Secondary) for winning the events, and all the girls who participated. Comments such as ‘is that all a chess tournament was? I thought it would be scary’ and ‘playing with a chess clock was intimidating at first, but I got used to it’. These experiences and opportunities for girls only to introduce them to tournament chess is how we will encourage them to play, learn and benefit from chess.

Our thanks to CSC and Holly Lodge Girl’s College for helping to organise and run such a fantastic event for the girls!
